You were never in the consideration set.

Chapter 12 of Agents, Inc. is called "When the Customer Is a Machine." It opens with a scene that is already happening.

A customer asks an AI agent for a recommendation: running shoes, 45-year-old casual runner, bad knees, $150 budget, race in six weeks.

The agent returns three options, compares prices, checks return policies, maybe places the order.

Your brand is not on the list.

Not because the product was worse. Not because your awareness campaign missed. The machine could not understand you, trust you, or transact with you easily enough to recommend you. You were never in the consideration set.

The numbers say this is already happening.

The book lays out the data. Adobe measured traffic flowing from generative AI sources to US retail websites and found it grew 1,200 percent in about seven months. Travel sites: up 1,700 percent. And 39 percent of US consumers have already used generative AI for online shopping.

That is not an edge case. That is a population-level change in how people find, evaluate, and buy.

Machine legibility is the new shelf placement

For decades, consumer brands fought for physical shelf space, then for search rankings. Agents, Inc. argues the next fight is legibility to agents, and gives a five-part framework: the Machine Legibility Stack. Among its layers, structured data an agent can parse, positioning clear enough for a machine to summarize accurately, and transaction access so the agent can complete the purchase without friction.

The brands that win with machine buyers will not be the loudest. They will be the clearest.

This week's move.

Run the test yourself. Ask an AI assistant to recommend products in your category with a realistic customer prompt. If you show up, ask why. If you do not, you have found next quarter's priority.

Or skip the setup and ask the machine that wrote the book. Vera is the AI co-author of Agents, Inc., and she'll walk you through your own machine-legibility audit in a few minutes. Talk to Vera → agentsincbook.com
